Press - Release

Students All Over the World will Convene in Malmö on May, 23-25 to Discuss Students Influence, Education Quality, International Cooperation and Internalisation.

In May, 23-25, the Student Unions International Conference in Malmö university will bring together more than 30 student unions from all over the world to discuss the issues of students’ influence and mobility, education quality, international cooperation with the private sector and internationalisation.

The conference is organized by the Student Union of Malmö University (Studentkåren Malmö) and supported by representatives of the corporate and public sector in Sweden as well as internationally. Region Skåne, Malmö municipality, Malmö University, Malmö Association of Foreign Affairs (UF), RIM, AEVY and Universum Communications are among the conference partners.

This is the first case when student union representatives from nearly all continents will get together to establish a large communion where Unions have the possibility to present and discuss various ideas and issues.

Students from the United Kingdom, Turkey, Russia, Finland, Ukraine, Denmark, Hong Kong and other countries have already confirmed their participation. The organizers of the event through the conference intend to forge a more unified and systematic basis for Unions to lobby for and implement the importance of students on the political agenda.

They stress that there should be a greater emphasis on collaboration among student unions all over the world. It could facilitate exchange of experience among students, improve student unions performance, bridge education and leadership and help resolving important student issues in the united effort.

During the conference the students will discuss the increasing importance of students at the global political agenda, conduct an international comparison of the student unions operations, and will debate on the enhancing students’ access to the professional realm. The conference will result in a Manifesto on Education and Student Influence addressed to the governments all around the globe.

The Manifesto will be the compilation of the selected through voting students’ proposals that can be used to improve the quality of education and enhance student influence. The goal behind this manifesto is to assert a set of common goals that governments should strive towards in order to improve the well-being of education and youth alike.

Furthermore, this document will illustrate a unified initiative by students, for students. It would be a pioneering effort that would reflect international and intercultural cooperation for the sake of better opportunities for today’s youth. According to the President of Malmö University Student Union Guido Guidos ‘in an increasingly globalized world, it becomes essential to extend the process of globalizing student rights and student influence over education. Student Union of Malmö University encourages all student unions throughout the world to attend this conference and get the unique opportunity to meet like-minded people and share both experiences and knowledge’.

Malmö University Student Union (Studentkåren Malmö) Studentkåren Malmö is a multifaceted organisation with a purpose to represent all students within Malmö University, an urban and cosmopolitan learning institute with a highly diverse student body. Ever since the Swedish government’s abolishment of the obligatory union membership rule in July 2010, Studentkåren Malmö has heavily reorganised its infrastructure and modus operandi to maintain its bona fide level of service quality towards students. With a steady membership figure of 50% of all its students, the organisation has expanded its operations to include consultation to other unions, both nationally and internationally.

Studentkåren Malmö has also focused significantly on the theme of diversity, a factor that is inherent within its framework, with members and staff hailing from different backgrounds, therefore differentiating the organization from the homogeneity that prevails in the other unions across Sweden. The honorable Reverend Jesse Jackson, who visited Malmö University in October 2011 to present his keynote on equality, respect and diversity in higher learning institutions, has even noted our efforts.
